Cakes & Quilts

For Relief Society last week, I was asked to teach a cake decorating class. I made this pig cake for one of the examples. Wouldn't any kid love this!? I used strawberry whoppers, pink snowball cakes, jr. mints, and strawberry and chocolate frostings.

We also tied quilts for the humanitarian aid effort that our church (the LDS church) is always contributing to.

We enjoyed lots of other cakes, and so many ladies in our ward have such great talents! These cakes were not only beautiful, but delicious too!!!

Debra Knudsen made this cake...I think SHE should have been the one teaching the cake decorating class! Are you kidding me!? Gorgeous! With the Relief Society symbol on it!

St. Patty's wall quilt

My cute clover wall quilt, put up on my cute door. Love that thing! Stay tuned for the Easter wall quilt that will be replacing it in the next few weeks! ;)

Is it too late for Valentines?

For Christmas, I gave my Mom a pattern for a little wall quilt for each holiday. Then I told her that I kind of gave it to myself too- meaning I was going to join her and make them for me, too:) This was the first one I made, for Valentines Day! I embroidered "Love" in the corner, and all you have to do for the heart is sew strips of fabric together, then trace a heart on it, and cut it out! Then you applique it to the background and bind it! Super easy, and super cute!!

A few Christmas decorations:)

*MORE CHRISTMAS DECOR TO COME! Here are some of our stockings
This is a cute yo yo tree that I made, and embroidered. Cute!
My little guy couldn't get enough of looking at his cute mug in that ornament! If you look close, you can see his reflection, as well as my husbands. So cute!
Such a good helper!

Baby Blanky for my little Owen

I hope it's not too girly, but I made this blanky for my little one who will be here any day now! (I'm HUGE!) I used some of my favorite colors and fabrics. I love the backing I used. It's a minky fabric, with embossed hearts.
I'm happy with how it turned out, especially since I just decided to make it randomly one night!:)

Craft of the Week-Grandma Jo's Vintage Quilts!

I I aint gonna lie. Grandma Jo is MY MOM! I have wanted to feature her work for a while, so here it is! She is such an amazing quilter, and her blog shows just a FEW of the examples of her handiwork! Check out her blog though! You won't be disappointed.:) She even has a few quilts up for sale. So if you want to buy one, email me- rachellelaree@msn.com, and I will hook you up:)This quilt is hand peiced and hand stitched. The entire thing! She is incredible! She is selling this gorgeous quilt for $99-which is a steal when you consider how much work she put into this!!
She made this quilt for my little guy, before he was born. This is his crib, and it hangs there now! His room is fisherman themed:)
And this is the quilt she made for my wedding! This is when it used to be on my bed, but I retired it to a quilt rack in my front room, so that it doesn't get too worn out. I LOVE tulips!

Quilt Swap

My Mom and her friends were kind enough to let me join their quilt swap! It starts out with a get together (with an even number of ladies), and you gab and eat, and then you go over the pattern of the quilt you want to do, then you each take home a copy of the pattern. Then you take all your scraps (which is what we did- a scrap quilt- but you could also use color coordinating fabrics), and then start cutting away! After you are done, and you have sewn together all your blocks, you will have a complete quilt that will look like mine:
Here is my quilt- all the blocks are sewn together, but the quilt is NOT sewn together. Here is our cute little quilt group! We are each holding one of the blocks we made! This is at the SECOND get together. At the second get together, you gab and eat ( we always do a yummy pot luck), and then you stack all your own blocks, and everyone else does the same. Then you go around and take two of each other's blocks. (You will end up with two of your own- and 14 of everyone else's). Then you go home, and get busy sewing the quilt together!! Here is mine, all finished!!
I embroidered all of our names on one of the blocks that I made so that I will remember exactly who participated in the quilt:)
Here she is! My first patchwork scrap quilt! I used a pretty lime green fabric for the backing, and then did a fold over edge to bind it. Then my Mom was kind enough to help me tie it!

There is also a THIRD get together- at the third one, you get together and GAB and EAT, of coarse, and then you each show off the quilt that you finished! So much fun! (Unfortunately, I have a dance team reunion the same day as this third get together, so I can't go. But I will be at all three get togethers for our next quilt that we will be doing in a few months!!)

Rag Quilt

I made this rag quilt for a friend that I am trading with- she is coloring my hair, and I am giving her this quilt! :) She wanted Fall colors, so I decided on a chocolate brown (always a fave), and a rusty red color. I did a different pattern for the quilt as well. Instead of doing a checker pattern like I have done in the past, I did a triple checker. I am pretty pleased with the outcome. And I love the colors!:) I hope she likes it as much as I do!

Quilt Book!

I am so excited about this quilt book I made. I am so proud of myself for thinking of it. I embroidered the words and designs on each of the pages, and then I put quilt batting in between the page with words and the back of the page. On some of the pages I embellished them with buttons or ribbons so that it will be more fun for Charlie to play with. I think I am going to save this for either Christmas or his birthday though!

If you are wondering why I did the "utah" page, it's because I want him to learn what our state looks like, and where he lives, exactly.:) And the page with his name will help him learn how to spell it.

Embroidery

Thanks to my Mom, I have picked up the craft of hand embroidery! I love it. My Mom is so talented at sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc. And she taught herself all she knows! She is such an incredible woman, and I hope to be like her someday!
